El Retiro Park

El Retiro Park is one of Madrid's lungs and a key part of daily life — full of culture, leisure and sport, it's the escape valve for every Madrileño.

Within its 118 hectares and more than 15,000 trees, you'll find endless gardens and green areas where you can get lost and enjoy long walks and spectacular sunsets.

You'll find architectural gems like the Crystal Palace, built in 1887; the large central pond presided over by a spectacular monument to King Alfonso XII; the avenue of statues, the rose garden, and the only statue erected to a fallen angel in Europe.

Juan Carlos I Park

On the outskirts of Madrid, near the city's exhibition centre and covering 160 hectares, lies Juan Carlos I Park.

It was inaugurated in 1992 to mark Madrid's celebration as European Capital of Culture that year. Behind its gates it hides several emblematic and unique areas, with more than 20 giant sculptures, a 3,000-square-metre olive grove, a lake and an almost 2,000-metre-long river.

It also has several playgrounds (some even with zip lines) and a free bicycle rental service, not forgetting huge grassy meadows where you can relax, do a bit of exercise or even fly a kite. Our favourite for a family picnic.

Cerro del Tío Pío

Located in the emblematic Vallecas neighbourhood, Cerro del Tío Pío is also commonly known as Parque de las Siete Tetas ("Park of the Seven Hills").

It's a very special park thanks to its spectacular views — highly recommended if you want to make your picnic a romantic experience.

Picnic, sunset and the best views of Madrid — is there a better combination?
